It's time for a change...

Do you ever feel like you are in a rut? You have goals that keep getting put off "until tomorrow" or "after the weekend". I feel like I have been in a rut since Ella has been born. There have been times when I start to accomplish my goals, but then I fall back into old habits. Part of my problem is that I am an "all or nothing" girl. If I can't accomplish them all, then I might as well not accomplish any of them. I pretty much set myself up for failure... and then I feel horrible that I am so weak that I can't accomplish my goals. It's FRUSTRATING being me sometimes. I have finally come to the conclusion that I need to take baby steps. I have given myself two goals... and two goals only.

My first goal is to study my scriptures everyday. How many times have we been told that great blessings will come as you read your scriptures..... and still, I sometimes "can't find the time" (but I can find time to read blogs...... blogs of people I don't even know).

I can tell you that my entire "rut" stems from not being consistent with this. As I look over periods in my life, I can see how doing this one simple thing works miracles. When combining scripture study with prayer, I become more intuned with the spirit, which helps with EVERYTHING......patience, inspiration on parenting, making my "weaknesses" become my strengths, receiving personal revelation on how to direct my life, resisting temptation, and most of all a feeling of peace and happiness in my heart and home.

Goal # 2. Go to bed earlier. I need to be in my bedroom by 10pm. It is rare for me to get eight hours of sleep. I know some people need less than that, but I NEED eight hours. In the morning, I am usually awakened by a demanding Ella..... I am soo tired that it is hard to get moving. I usually pour her a bowl of cereal and flop myself on the couch, in hopes that I can snooze for 15 more minutes. Then I drag through the rest of the morning... it is hard for me to act patient and loving when I am so tired, and it snowballs from there... too tired to workout etc. Not to mention the health benefits of getting a good nights rest (better skin, better able to handle stress, better appetite control, etc.).

Ok- it's 10PM. Time for me to get to bed. Hasta luego.

You just named two of my weaknesses. I struggle with scripture reading so much! And bed-time for me is usually 11:30. Then I do the same thing in the morning. Snooze on the couch while Zane wreaks havoc from here to eternity. I barely pull myself together to pick up the kids after school, sometimes. Thanks for sharing what alot of us need to be better at.

Ok . . .confession time. Scripture study isn't my strength either. I do read some form of scriptures (Ensign, talks, actual scriptures)every day. But it's definitely not long enough or even quality studying time. To be honest, I get bored while reading the ancient scriptures and my mind starts to wander. I'll read the same passage over and over again, not really getting much from it. Suggestions, anyone?

You have inspired me...as usual. These are also things I MUST work on. I keep telling myself that and then it doesnt happen...sooo, maybe we should check up on each other Jen. Oooh mornings...so hard on me too. I am sooo glad Chad gets Parker up for seminary and makes his breakfast everyday and then takes him. Dont know if I will be that lucky when these little guys get there :)
I really need the parenting inspiration right now, so I think I am going to try your challenge as well, starting today. Thanks for the boost!

I think your goals are great and they are both one's that I need to make myself...I totally get it ;) Good luck. The great deals were at Fry's and the coupons are at coolsavings.com and some that I had from previous sunday newspapers, oh and the chocolate chips are from verybestbaking.com... I think. You can google the item and put coupon at the end that's how I usually find them. They also have a great deal on Butter 1.50 for 1 lb of land o lakes butter and the coolsavings.com has a 55cent coupon that fry's will double up to $1.00 so it makes them 50cents. They were out at my fry's so I got a raincheck. Happy shopping. We still need to get together :)

Thanks Jen, I totally agree with you that the basis of claiming our self control comes when we study the scriptures. I have the same problems as you and I don't even have children at home!! I now go to bed even later and read irregularly and I know better. Sometimes I think it was easier doing what I should be doing when I was raising children because I had to be a good example for them. Now, I only have to do it for myself and I can be a slacker. I am going to do better too. Love ya

It looks like these two things are hard for almost everyone! I feel wrong going to bed earlier than 11:30. Even if I'm tired I think to myself, 'I can't go to bed this early. The night is still young.' It's ridiculous.

I could copy and paste your post into my blog. These are two of my weaknesses as well. One would think that I would get to bed early with a child who wakes up every few hours to eat but I don't. I cherish that time I have with my hubby when the kids are in bed. Anyway, good luck with your goals!
